A museum (/mjuˈziːəm/; myoo-zee-um) is an institution that cares for (conserves) a collection of artifacts and other objects of artistic, cultural, historical, or scientific importance and makes them available for public viewing through exhibits that may be permanent or temporary. Most large museums are located in major cities throughout the world and more local ones exist in smaller cities, towns and even the countryside. Museums have varying aims, ranging from serving researchers and specialists to serving the general public. The goal of serving researchers is increasingly shifting to serving the general public.
Some of the most attended museums include the Louvre in Paris, the National Museum of China in Beijing, the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., the British Museum in London, the National Gallery in London and The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. There are many types of museums, including art museums, natural history museums, science museums, war museums and children's museums.

Australia (/ɒˈstreɪliə/, /ə-/, colloquially /-jə/), officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia, is an Oceanian country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area. Neighbouring countries include Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and East Timor to the north; the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east.
For about 50,000 years before the first British settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who spoke languages grouped into roughly 250 language groups. After the European discovery of the continent by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales from 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades; the continent was explored and an additional five self-governing crown colonies were established. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system that functions as a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy comprising six states and several territories. The population of 24 million is highly urbanised and heavily concentrated in the eastern states and on the coast.

The United States of America (USA), commonly referred to as the United States (U.S.) or America, is a federal republic composed of 50 states, a federal district, five major territories and various possessions. The 48 contiguous states and Washington, D.C., are in central North America between Canada and Mexico. The state of Alaska is in the northwestern part of North America and the state of Hawaii is an archipelago in the mid-Pacific. The territories are scattered about the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. At 3.8 million square miles (9.842 million km2) and with over 320 million people, the country is the world's third or fourth-largest by total area and the third most populous. It is one of the world's most ethnically diverse and multicultural nations, the product of large-scale immigration from many countries. The geography and climate of the United States are also extremely diverse, and the country is home to a wide variety of wildlife.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a sovereign state in the European Union. Lying off the north-western coast of the European mainland, it includes the island of "Great Britain" (a term also applied loosely to refer to the whole country), the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands.Northern Ireland is the only part of the UK that shares a land border with another state—the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border, the UK is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to its east, the English Channel to its south and the Celtic Sea to its south-southwest. The Irish Sea lies between Great Britain and Ireland. With an area of 93,800 square miles (243,000 km2), the UK is the 80th-largest sovereign state in the world and the 11th-largest in Europe. It is also is the 21st-most populous country, with an estimated 64.5 million inhabitants.
The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of governance. Its capital city is London, an important global city and financial centre with an urban population of 10,310,000, the fourth-largest in Europe and second-largest in the European Union. The current monarch—since 6 February 1952—is Queen Elizabeth II. The UK consists of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. The latter three have devolved administrations, each with varying powers, based in their capitals, Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast, respectively. The nearby Isle of Man, Bailiwick of Guernsey and Bailiwick of Jersey are not part of the United Kingdom, being Crown dependencies with the British Government responsible for defence and international representation.
Sydney /ˈsɪdni/ is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia and Oceania. Located on Australia's east coast, the metropolis surrounds the world's largest natural harbour, and sprawls towards the Blue Mountains to the west. Residents of Sydney are known as "Sydneysiders". Sydney is the second official seat and second official residence of the Governor-General of Australia, the Prime Minister of Australia and the Cabinet of Australia.
The Sydney area has been inhabited by indigenous Australians since the Upper Paleolithic period. The first British settlers arrived in 1788 to found Sydney as a penal colony, the first European settlement in Australia. Since convict transportation ended in the mid-19th century, the city has transformed from a colonial outpost into a major global cultural and economic centre.
The population of Sydney at the time of the 2011 census was 4.39 million, 1.5 million of which were born overseas, representing many different nationalities and making Sydney one of the most multicultural cities in the world. There are more than 250 different languages spoken in Sydney and about one-third of residents speak a language other than English at home.

The reopening of an Australian Museum of Natural History has been a real thrill for visitors. Some of the delighted and rather frightened guests however think the animatronic creatures greeting them at the entrance were "a little too realistic". The Queensland Museum of Natural History in Brisbane chose to mark its reopening after renovation with an unusual party. It invited several animatronic dinosaurs. Nestled in the Adelaide Hills in Birdwood is the National Motor Museum, opened in 1964 and taken over by the Government in 1976 and home to a significant historical collection of cars, motorcycles and commercial vehicles. Many people would know the National Museum in Birdwood as the end point for the 'Bay to Birdwood' Classic, Australia's most significant motoring event that is likened to events such as 'Pebble Beach Concours' in the US and the 'London to Brighton' event in the UK. This year's event to be held in the last week in September is expected to attract over 1,750 entrants and around 60,000 people expected to watch the rally from various viewpoints along the journey. Before entering the Museum proper, Museum Director, Paul Rees takes Fletch through the Old Flour Mill built in th...
George Smithwick is a sixth generation cooper who makes traditional wooden buckets and barrels. He is continuing a family tradition that began in the 18th century in Ireland. George talks to us about what a Cooper is, some history of the trade, tools he uses, and the step-by-step process of making a wooden bucket. Edward Washington and Jimmy Murray from the Sydney Living Museums' Programs team flew down to catch up with George to see if he could help with making us some new buckets and he was happy to show us how he worked; using tools, techniques and practises that have remained the same for hundreds of years. George also let us into what was once a very tight-knit and sometimes secretive coopering industry – and we captured it all on camera. See our other traditional trade vids her...

The Midwest is rich with legacy museums founded around the turn of the last century by wealthy patrons. The Toledo Museum of Art, the Cleveland Museum of Art, and the Detroit Institute of Arts are three of the most prestigious museums in the country; however, all three have dealt with the challenges of economic downturn and changing demographics. And, notably, all three are now led by international directors. For this year's International Museum Day, Irish-born Brian Kennedy has invited the DIA's Graham Beal (Great Britain) and Cleveland's David Franklin (Canada) to join him on the Peristyle stage for a wide-ranging discussion about the state of these grand "temples of art."
http://www.wanderlust.co.uk/ExploreAustralia We’ll guide you from Darwin, a city that has been destroyed and rebuilt twice in its short lifetime to the mighty Uluru also known as Ayers Rock, the cultural centre of ancient Australia. Despite its enormous size, the Northern Territory is the most sparsely populated of all Australian states and territories. Only a couple of hundred thousand people live in an area that covers one and a half million square miles. It’s twice the size of France, and six times the size of the UK. Most of the territory’s population live in Darwin, where our journey begins. The most northern city of Australia is an important hub of trade, commerce, defence and culture. It also acts as the country’s launching pad to Asia, and is closer to Bali than to Sydney. The...
"The value of the South Australian Museum is unquestioned" It holds among the most extensive and important collections of Aboriginal creativity and material culture in the world. But what values, and whose values, does a museum promote in the way it cares for and displays art and material culture? How does this differ from the role of an Art Gallery? And where on North Terrace, if anywhere, does the extraordinary narrative of Aboriginal art history play out? Australia is home to the most interesting, continuous and dynamic artistic traditions on our planet. Yet this story gets diluted in the divisions between art galleries and museums, between their collections, and between the intellectual traditions such as art history and anthropology that interpret them. In this lecture we walk the ...

Presented by Neil MacGregor, Director, British Museum The great cities of the world are global cities where citizens engage with the history, traditions and identities of people from all over the world: people who share their cities as residents, commuters or visitors. Museums can and should play a major part in making the idea of global citizenship a reality. They offer a public forum where different ways of thinking and doing can be presented and discussed, and where great objects from all around the globe can be exchanged and exhibited. This lecture was given at the University of Western Australia on Tuesday 25 October 2011.
